Can Microcement Go Over Existing Surfaces?
We hear this question on almost every renovation: can we keep what is already there?
Often, yes. That is one of the reasons X-Bond Microcement is such a useful design tool. Instead of automatically tearing out tile, concrete, plaster, or built-in surfaces, a trained installer can assess what is there and determine whether it can become the foundation for a new seamless finish.
That can mean less demolition, less waste, and a faster path to a completely different-looking space.
Remodel without unnecessary removal
X-Bond is applied in thin, hand-trowelled layers. A typical finished system is only about 1/8 inch thick, so it can transform a surface without adding the bulk of another conventional finish.
Depending on the project, X-Bond can be installed over sound, correctly prepared:
Ceramic and porcelain tile
Concrete and cementitious surfaces
Plaster and approved board systems
Wood and architectural joinery
Masonry and natural stone
Other approved hard surfaces
The important word is sound. Microcement is strong, but it does not make a loose, moving, wet, or contaminated substrate disappear. The surface underneath still needs to be stable enough to support the new finish.
What the installer checks first
A good assessment is practical. Is the tile firmly bonded? Are there active cracks? Is moisture moving through the slab? Is the wood assembly rigid enough? Are oils, waxes, or old coatings likely to interfere with adhesion?
Those questions decide the preparation plan. Some projects need cleaning and priming. Others need repairs, reinforcement, waterproofing, or a more substantial correction before X-Bond begins.
